Utah Tech Week is a smorgasbord of experiences and events hosted by startups, VC firms, community organizations — anyone who supports the startup community.
The “why” behind Utah Tech Week is to cultivate “happy collisions” in the Utah tech community; the kind that lead to friendships, partnerships, and deals. There’s no cost to attend or sponsor, the only requirement is a desire to help build Utah’s tech scene.
Christina Qi is the Co-Founder and CEO of Databento. Databento launched 1.5 years ago, has $40M in funding, and is the data API backbone of over 8,000 companies today. She formerly founded Domeyard LP, a hedge fund focused on HFT that traded up to $7.1 billion USD per day. Failing to earn a job offer after a Wall Street internship, Christina started Domeyard from her dorm room with $1000 in savings, in 2012. Her fund was a tiny minnow amongst the tigers of the hedge fund world, but after Michael Lewis’s Flash Boys came out in 2014 and HFT firms hid from the spotlight, Domeyard accidentally found itself in the center of the ring. Over the next decade, her company’s story was featured on the front page of Forbes and Nikkei, and quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, CNN, NBC, and the Financial Times as a result of the controversy and fascination with HFT. By a series of accidents, Christina became a voice in her industry, contributing to the World Economic Forum’s research on AI in finance and teaching Domeyard’s case study at Harvard Business School. She is grateful to be able to open up about her mistakes, and to help people turn failures into opportunities.
Christina is a member of the MIT Corporation Development Committee, a standing committee of the MIT Corporation (the board of trustees). She was Co-Chair of the Board of Invest in Girls, bringing financial literacy education to underserved populations across the US. Christina also sits on the Board of Directors of The Financial Executives Alliance (FEA) Hedge Fund Group, drove entrepreneurship efforts at the MIT Sloan Boston Alumni Association, and served on the U.S. Non-Profit Boards Committee of 100 Women in Finance. Although "X Under X" lists are a gimmick, she’ll admit that Forbes 30 Under 30 made a positive impact on her life by giving her a community - friends who dragged her out of bed during the lowest days of her life. Christina earned a Bachelor of Science in Management Science from MIT in 2013 and earned her CAIA designation in 2015.

Orly Alter is a USTAR associate professor of bioengineering and human genetics at the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute and the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah, a scientific advisory board member of the NCI-DOE Cancer Moonshot collaboration, and the CSO and a co-founder of Prism AI Therapeutics. Her $3.4M NCI Physical Sciences in Oncology project partially supported her developing quantum mechanics-based multi-tensor AI/ML and solving the 75-year-old problem of correctly predicting — glioblastoma patients' survival, targets to sensitize their tumors, and their response — from their genomes. As a genetics postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, she invented the "eigengene" in a top 50 most cited PNAS paper of all time. Her Ph.D. thesis in applied physics, also at Stanford, was published by Wiley and is recognized as crucial to quantum computing.
Alter has mathematically proven that her AI/ML overcomes the challenges of real-world "skinny," noisy, and high-dimensional data. She has computationally shown that her algorithms, known as comparative spectral decompositions, are uniquely able to discover accurate, precise, actionable, and mechanistically interpretable predictors, applicable to the general population, from the multi-omes of as few as 19 patients. She has experimentally demonstrated that the predictors consistently validate across laboratories and sometimes across indications, in federated and imbalanced studies and over time, and outperform all other indicators where they exist.

From a small Swiss farming village of 600 people to the frontiers of AI-powered FinTech and Crypto - curiosity has always been the constant driving force in my life. That same curiosity pulled me - somewhat unexpectedly - into the hedge fund world, where I became a founding member of UBS’s prime brokerage business back in 1996. At the time, I barely spoke English and couldn’t even spell “hedge funds.”
Today, that same curiosity has drawn me toward AI and Blockchain technology. These innovations are redefining the business landscape. Leveraging three decades of financial expertise, I am now focused on helping others navigate this shift - bridging the gap between TradFi and the future of AI, blockchain, and tokenization.
